Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the city of Canton was originally established as Etowah, a frontier settlement, in 1833. It was named Canton by founding fathers in 1834. Among its early industries were agriculture, marble finishing and cotton textiles. The Canton Cotton Mills, later known as Canton Textile Mills, was once one of the largest manufacturers in the south.
In the late 1800’s Canton was a popular summer resort for Georgians seeking relief from the warmer southern regions of the state. Today, the beauty and climate of Canton continues to draw new residents to the area. As Canton experiences historic growth—both residential and commercial—it still maintains the beauty and charm of a small town.
Since the 1800’s Canton has been the commercial, social and educational center of Cherokee County and continues to enjoy that status today as it manages historic growth in both residential and commerical areas.
